Christmas delivery dates on Shopify: how to show them so people still order

From late November, almost every shopper has the same question before they buy: “Will it arrive by Christmas?”

If your store doesn’t answer it clearly, many people won’t risk it. They’ll leave and buy somewhere that does, often a big retailer that shows a delivery date right next to the button. The good news: answering that question is one of the easiest Christmas wins on Shopify.

1. Work out your last order dates

Start with your courier’s deadlines, then take off the time you need to pick, pack and post.

For 2026, Royal Mail’s last recommended posting dates for UK delivery before Christmas are:

Service Post by
2nd Class Fri 18 Dec
Tracked 48 Sat 19 Dec
1st Class and Tracked 24 Mon 21 Dec
Special Delivery Guaranteed Wed 23 Dec

These were correct at the time of writing; check Royal Mail’s Christmas page before you publish yours, and your own courier’s dates if you use someone else. Remote areas such as the Scottish Highlands and Northern Ireland can need an extra day or two.

Your last order date = courier deadline − your packing time − a buffer. If you dispatch the next working day and post by 1st Class, your customers need to order a day or two before Monday 21 December. Give yourself a day’s buffer for the busiest week of the year. It’s far better to under-promise than to deal with “where’s my order?” emails on Christmas Eve.

2. Show it where people decide

One date hidden on a delivery page isn’t enough. Put it in the places shoppers actually look:

  • The announcement bar. “🎄 Order by 18 December for Christmas delivery” at the top of every page. Most Shopify themes have this built in.
  • Next to the Add to basket button. This is where the decision happens. Most modern themes let you add a short text block to the product page without any code.
  • In the basket. A short reminder right before checkout reassures people at the moment they’re most likely to hesitate.
  • In your delivery options at checkout. Rename your shipping rates so they speak human: “Express (order by 21 Dec for Christmas)” is clearer than “Tracked 24”.
  • In your emails. A “last order dates” email in early December gets people off the fence.

If you want the dates to update automatically, with a countdown to today’s cut-off for example, there are delivery-date apps for Shopify, or a developer can build it into your theme so you don’t add another app to your store.

3. Make the faster option easy to choose

As the standard deadline passes, many shoppers will happily pay more to get a gift on time. Offer an express option, give it a clear name and price, and mention it in the announcement bar: “Standard delivery has closed. Order by 21 Dec with Express.”

4. Change the message when the dates pass

Don’t leave an out-of-date promise on your site. Plan the switch in advance:

  1. Early December: “Order by [date] for Christmas delivery.”
  2. The last few days: “Last chance! Order by [date] with Express.”
  3. After the last date: be honest that orders will arrive after Christmas, and point people to an alternative.

5. Sell gift cards for last-minute shoppers

Shopify gift cards are sent by email straight away, so they’re the perfect answer for anyone who’s left it too late. Once your last delivery date passes, put them front and centre: in the announcement bar, on the homepage and in a final email (“Still need a present? Gift cards arrive instantly 🎁”). If you have a shop, click and collect does the same job for local customers.

A quick checklist

  • Last order dates worked out, with a buffer
  • Announcement bar updated
  • Delivery message next to Add to basket
  • Shipping options renamed clearly
  • “Last order dates” email scheduled
  • Gift cards ready to promote after the cut-off
  • A reminder in your calendar to change the messages as each date passes
